FDA Seizes More Than 1 Million Worth Of Illegal Dietary Supplements

Authorities, with the request of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, seized over $1.3 million worth of illegal dietary supplements from the Michigan-based company LG Sciences.

According to the FDA, the products made by the company contain food addictives or newly developed dietary ingredients, which are not yet approved by the FDA, violating the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.

“The products previously were tested and found to contain one or more unapproved food additives and/or new dietary ingredients for which there is inadequate information to provide reasonable assurance that the ingredients do not present a significant or unreasonable risk of illness or injury,” the FDA said.

The products were designed for body builders, marketing and selling the products online and in retail stores with the names “Formadrol Extreme XL”, “Methyl 1-D XL” and “Methyl 1-D”. Anyone who has bought and used the products is advised to consult their doctors, the FDA said.

Attorney for LG Sciences Ronal Berry said Friday that all products of the company are legal with ingredients that are safe for consumers. The FDA seizure, Berry says, “was merely a preliminary step in determining compliance with food regulations.”

In a statement released by the company, Berry wrote: “Although LG Sciences feels the temporary restraint of its product by the FDA is inappropriate, the company appreciates that the FDA wishes to protect the public.”

LG Sciences was the successor of a company called Legal Gear, which was also warned by the FDA to stop distributing another product marketed as dietary supplement, but was actually an FDA-unapproved drug that contains synthetic steroids.
