According to a new study from Canada weight loss surgery reduces the risk of cancer in obese people.
Researchers at McGill University in Montreal performed the study, that showed that obese people who underwent gastric bypass surgery to help them lose weight could reduce their risk of developing cancer by as much as 80 percent.
For their study, researchers compared the health records of obese patients who underwent weight loss surgery between the 80′s and early 2000 with obese people who did not have the surgery.
Those surgery patients lost an average of 67% of their extra weight, and during 5-years of follow-up, only 2% of them developed cancer compared to more than 8% of the non-surgery group.
The most dramatic decrease in types of cancer was in breast and colon cancers. Other cancers to see a sharp reduction in positive cases were skin and prostate cancers.
The study was presented on Wednesday at the annual meeting of the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery in Washington D.C.
