A new study finds that as kids enter into their teenaged years, they become lazier and do not exercise as much.

This trend has been helped along by the vastly popular world of video games, a trend that sees teens choosing to sit around playing computer and video games instead of playing sports with their pals outdoors.

More than 1000 children were followed between the ages of 9 and 15, allowing for US researchers to document a trend that has hit the US hard and resulted in a growing rate of teen obesity.

By the time the children in the study reached the age of 15, only 1 out of every 3 was getting the recommended amount of exercise.

“People don’t recognize this as the crisis that it is,” said lead author Dr. Philip Nader, a pediatrician and professor emeritus at the University of California at San Diego.

It is estimated that now in the US, more than 25 million teens are either overweight or obese, a fact that puts them at risk of heart disease as adults.

The study is published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
