Jalapeno peppers are the cause of a massive salmonella outbreak that has sickened more than 1200 people living in the US.

When cases first started popping up in April, many experts blamed raw tomatoes, a fact that lead consumers to stop buying them

The FDA recently cleared tomatoes as the source of the outbreak that has hospitalized hundreds and killed one man, and has turned their attention to the jalapenos.

The pepper in question was found at a south Texas distribution facility, but it did in fact originated in Mexico.

“FDA has found a genetically matched Salmonella saintpaul isolate from a distribution center called Agricola Zaragosa in McAllen, Texas,” said Dr. David Acheson, associate commissioner for foods at the FDA.

The agency is strongly advising consumers not to purchase or eat either jalapeno or serrano peppers at this time.

The last reported case of salmonella was back on July 4th, but it is very likely that cases are still being found.
