According to researchers the flu vaccine is no good at protecting elderly people from developing pneumonia.

Pneumonia is very dangerous for elderly people due to their immune systems already being depleted with age.

The study, conducted by researchers from the Group Health Center for Health Studies in Seattle, found that those elderly participants who were given the vaccine had the same likelyhood of developing pneumonia as those not given the flu vaccine.

In total more than 1000 participants took part in the study, some of whome were as old as 94.

According to the researchers, just because the flu vaccine fails to protect against pneumonia, it does not mean than elderly people should not receive it to help build up their immunity.
