Sleep apnea can raise your risk of death by 4 times according to the results of multiple studies.

3 new studies have been released today, both of which coming to this unsettling conclusion.

Sleep apnea is defined as short periods during sleep when a person stops breathing.

1 of the studies performed lasted 18 years, confirming previous study findings that people who suffer from sleep apnea are more apt to die from other causes.

“This is not a condition that kills you acutely. It is a condition that erodes your health over time,” said Dr. Michael J. Twery, director of the National Center
on Sleep Disorders Research.

People with such disorders “have been sleep deprived for perhaps very long periods of time, they are struggling to sleep. If this is happening night after night, week after week, on top of all our other schedules, this is a dangerous recipe,” he added.

It is estimated that in the US alone more than 12 million people suffer from sleep apnea.

The studies are published in the journal Sleep.
