Results of a new Quinnipiac University poll show that residents of New York City want a referendum to decide if Mayor Bloomberg should be allowed to run for a third straight term.

Usually, an elected official is only allowed to remain in office for 2 consecutive terms but the New York City Council maybe changeing their stance on the issue to allow Bloomberg a third straight term.

Recently, Bloomberg stated that his financial experience would benefit the city when the city falls upon hard times. He was elected into office in 2001.

Results of the poll show that 51% of respondants want a 3-term limit, with 45% against a 3-term limit.

“Opponents of Mayor Bloomberg’s plan to extend term limits are winning — narrowly — the battle for the hearts and mind of New Yorkers,” said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

“They love Mayor Mike and two weeks ago they were ready to give him a third term, in a hypothetical situation. But now that it’s real and other voices are being heard, voters are having second thoughts,” Carroll said.

The poll did show that at least 59% of residents would indeed vote for Bloomberg if he was actually awarded the opportunity to run again.
