The former Prime Minister of Thailand has been found guilty of corruption and will be spending the next 2 years in jail.
Thaksin Shinawatra was found guilty by the Supreme court on charges that he aided in his wife’s purchase of lucrative Bangkok real estate back in 2003 when he was Prime Minister of the country.
According to Thaksin’s lawyers, his wife bid openly on the real estate, and simply outbid other bidders to claim it.
He and his wife fled to England after he originally made bail but the Supreme court has dropped the charges against her for tax evasion.
“The defendant was the prime minister at the time. He should have been honest and ethical and should not have violated counter corruption laws,” Thongloh Chomngam, head of the court’s nine-judge panel, said in reading from the lengthy verdict.
Shinawatra remains in England at this time and Thai authorities are yet to begin proceedings to extradite him. It is reported that he will be appealing the court decision.
