A new artificial heart has been created by scientists that they say is ready to be tested out in human beings.
The device, manufactured by a French company, operates on electronic sensors to help regulate the proper heart beat and blood flow.
It is covered by a special type of tissue, to allow it not to be rejected by the person’s body.
According to its manufacturer, the artificial heart would offer a chance of life for the thousands of patients who die while awaiting a heart on the heart transplant list.
“I was struck by the therapeutic gap, and I thought I could make my contribution as I had already succeeded with bioprostheses,” said manufacturer Alain Carpentier.
They are awaiting approval from French authorities before they can begin clinical human trials.
Up until now, the heart has been tested on digital simulations, and in animals, with “no known complications.”
