New research presented in the United States shows that the nicotine dependence rate of American smokers has reached a 15 year high.
This is very bad news for smokers trying to quit, who just can’t seem to go without their nicotine fix.
According to researchers of a new study, smokers who are seeking medical intervention to help them quit smoking are far more addicted to nicotine than those trying to quit 2 decades ago.
For their study, researchers analyzed the nicotine dependence levels of 3 groups of smokers entering into medical programs to help them quit.
In the group from 2005 to 2006 as many as 73% of them were deemed to be nicotine dependent.
In the group from 1994, 66% of them were deemed to be nicotine dependent.
In the group from 1989, only 55% of them were classified as nicotine dependent.
Researchers of the study do not cite a reason for the increased number of smokers addicted to nicotine, but state that stress could be a contributing factor.
They presented their study at the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians.
