Panel Blames FDA For Not Assessing bisphenol A Health Risks

A new report released by a group of US scientific experts finds that the FDA did not do a good job when it came to assessing health risks associated with the chemical bisphenol A.

The regulatory agency insists, and has always insisted that bisphenol A, which is used in the production of plastic is safe when ingested in small amounts, but according to the group of experts they have failed to back this up with scientific proof.

Studies claim that bisphenol A leaches off of the plastic used in the making of baby bottles, thus is ingested by infants.

The FDA states that ingesting the chemical is safe at current exposure levels, despite studies which state otherwise.

Many manufacturers of baby products have announced their intent to quit using bisphenol A, due to health risks that appear to be present, present to all but the FDA.

“The panel was very clear, but we don’t know if the FDA is going to listen. If they do, it could be a couple of years before they do anything. The FDA’s assessment should have been done right the first time. Now it’s going to have to be redone,” said consumer activist Diana Zuckerman, president of the National Research Center for Women & Families.

The report, spanning 17 pages in length will be available starting today on the FDA web site.
