A new survey conducted in the US finds that many hospitals are failing to please the patients that they treat.

Researchers of a survey, which ranked the overall patient experience at US hospitals found that many areas of care were lacking, including pain management and bedside manner.

The hospitals that took part were part of the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey which is a manditory survey for them if they wish to receive increased Medicare reimbursements.

In total, more than 2400 hospitals were included in the study, featuring satisfaction surveys that were analyzed by the researchers.

Two major concerns that the researchers noted by looking at the surveys were pain management, and fuzzy discharge instructions.

Almost 1 out of 3 patients noted that pain management was a concern for them, while 1 in 5 noted that their discharge instructions were not clearly stated to them.

“It’s shocking that given the $2.1 trillion spent on health care that we have not had this kind of information before,” said Dr. Ashish Jha, a Harvard health policy researcher.

The study can be found in the New England Journal of Medicine.
