Disney has announced their intentions to launch a new film label called Disneynature which will be home to movies and other productions for theatre.
The channel will be launching in 2009, with the first movie entitled “Earth” and being released on Earth day.
filmmaker Jean-Francois Camilleri has been given the job of running the channel, as he has been instrumental in the production of previous Disney hits with a nature related theme, most popular of which being “March of the Penguins.”
“First of all it was a great film,” Camilleri said. “The fact that it worked shows that people had an appetite for it.”
So far a total of 7 movies have been announced for the new channel.
“Our goal at Disneynature is to bring big event films as only nature can tell,” Dick Cook, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios, said in making the announcement at the Disney studio lot.
“When you create high-quality family entertainment, you can have both success and create shareholder value,” said Disney chief executive Robert Iger.
