Boston (ChatterShmatter)- Sources have confirmed that the Red Sox first major move of the hot stove season involves platoon outfielder, and fan favorite Coco Crisp.
The trade brings right handed reliever Ramon Ramierez to the Red Sox. Ramirez is 27 years old and posted a 3-2 record last year with a 2.64 ERA in 71 appearances. In those 71 appearances Ramirez struck out 70 of the batters he faced.
This move bolster’s the Red Sox bullpen which already has Hideki Okajima, who did struggle in 2008 and saw the next great arm from the Red Sox farm system Justin Masterson make a splash in the bigs. The move however may mean that there is intention of the Red Sox management to move Masterson to a starter role as has been rumored.
This move also weakens a strong outfield which could become an issue considering the health concerns around J.D. Drew.
