Los Angeles (ChatterShmatter) – Rock guitarist Joe Satriani has filed papers in a Los Angeles court on Thursday claiming the band’s Grammy nominated song “Viva La Vida” stole a riff he wrote.
Coldplay was nominated just a day ago for Song of the Year and seven Grammy’s in total.
The track Satriani claims the riff was stolen from is his instrumental song “I Could Fly” from his 2004 album Is There Love in Space.
The actual court papers claim the Coldplay song used “substantial original portions” of Satriani’s song and he is seeking “any and all profits” Coldplay has made as a direct result of plagarism.
Lead singer Chris Martin, Bass player Guy Berryman, guitatist Johnny Buckland and Will Champion are all credited with writing the song, who’s title was inspired by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.
The album Death and All His Friends went to number one on the charts in 36 countries and did have a number of hit singles, Viva La Vida being one of them.
