Every now and again a celebrity death hoax pops up in the news and the untimely death of actor Morgan Freeman was quite a shock to his millions of fans. The rumor started on Twitter and spread like wildfire across the internet, as Twitterers retweeted the alleged CNN tweet to all their own followers.
The fake original tweet read: “RT @CNN: Breaking News: actor Morgan Freeman has passed away in his Burbank home.” Because CNN is supposed to be an authority when it comes to news, their tweet was taken very seriously, resulting in many media outlets picking it up and retweeting it as a breaking news story.
Last night CNN took to their own official Twitter page to clear up any confusion: “CNN did not report Morgan Freeman death,” the network stated. “Rumor is false. CNN will aggressively investigate this hoax.”
