It is being reported that Geraldine Hoff Doyle has died at the age of 86. For those unaware of who she was, she was the inspiration behind the Rose the Riveter WWII poster, which was used to encourage young women to volunteer for the war effort while men were overseas in battle.
The poster featured Doyle wearing a factory uniform with her flexed arm in the air and a speech balloon stating “We can do it!” The poster was a huge influence in the lives of millions of women as eventually more than six million joined the war effort and a song, “Rosie the Riveter” was even made in 1942 to celebrate women’s contributions to the war effort.
