Everybody knew that the axe was going to fall on Cleveland Browns lame duck coach Eric Mangini and today that axe fell. After a miserable 5-11 season, the same record that the Browns ended last year with also the coach was fired by team president Mike Holmgren.
While coach of the Browns, Mangini sported a pathetic 10-22 record and ended the year with a four game losing streak. In yesterday’s season finale, the Browns were crushed 41-9 by the Pittsburgh Steelers. “This decision was not easy for me, and it was one into which I put a great deal of thought,” Holmgren said. “Although we have made improvements this season, my responsibility is to ensure that we establish a program that will allow this team to compete at a championship level. That will continue to be our goal in everything we do.”
