A bluefin tuna weighing in at more than 750 pounds has sold at Tokyo’s Tsukiji fish market for 32.49 million yen, equal to 400,000 dollars. This is an incredible sale price for the auction and a record when it comes to the price of a fish.
The giant fish was caught off Japan’s northernmost island of Hokkaido, and purchased by owners of a sushi restaurant who will be serving fresh tuna for months to come. “There’s a real mood of celebration with the start of the new year, and that helped push the price higher,” said a spokesman for Tsukiji. Tuna is one of the favorite types of fish in Japan, thus the market for it is very competitive.
