Monday is Valentine’s Day and to celebrate the occasion, the NASA spacecraft Stardust will be getting up close and personal with comet Tempel 1. Stardust will be redirected to pass within 200 kilometers of the comet in its last quest before it is cast away for ever.
Stardust will take pics of the comet as it flies by, the first pics to be taken since the deep impact mission in 2005 in which NASA flew a probe into the comet to determine what it was made up of. “For the first time, we’ll go back to see what happens to a comet” after it passes close to the sun, said Pete Schultz of Brown University.
