The newest airport terminal has been opened in Beijing in preparation for the 2008 Olympics that are set to be held there this summer.
The terminal and ground transportation center measures more than 14 million-square-feet and will definitely take a lot of stress over the other 2 terminals in the airport.
The terminal is a gargantuan glass-and-steel creation and saw its first arrivals as a 1-hour domestic flight from Shandong province in China’s east touched down, followed later in the day by a British Airways flight.
“It is the epitome of China’s fast-growing economy and portrays our strong state power,” said Zhang Guobao, deputy director of National Development and Reform Commission, the country’s main economic planning agency.
Airport officials have said that at least 64 million passengers are expected to come through this year, up from 50 million last year and 20 million in 2000.
The terminal was built in just under 4 years specifically to handle huge amounts of people that are expected this summer.
