The British music group Radiohead have announced that any future albums that they release will not be able to be downloaded for free by fans.
Previous to this statement, fans could download tracks from the band’s ‘In Rainbows’, paying whatever they wanted to pay for them.
Despite the fact that fans could download the album for virtually nothing, when it came out for real, it still topped charts in the UK and US.
According to front man Thom Yorke the decision to let fans pay what they felt was appropriate for tracks from the album was a “one-off response to a particular situation.”
“It was one of those things where we were in the position of everyone asking us what we were going to do,” Yorke told the Hollywood Reporter.
“I don’t think it would have the same significance now anyway, if we chose to give something away again.”
Other bands are quickly jumping on the digital train of thought, most recently Coldplay who have announced plans to let fans download songs from their web site for free.
