Eating foods such as nuts and corn have been proven not to worsen symptoms associated with Diverticulitis, which is a digestive disease
Results of a new study find that people diagnosed with Diverticulitis can actually lessen their own symptoms associated with the digestive tract disease by eating foods such as nuts and corn, foods previously thought to enhance the condition.
The disease is characterized by the development of small pouches in the colon, resulting in chronic pain of the colon, nausea, cramping, vomiting and even bleeding.
For years, doctors have advised patients diagnosed with the condition to avoid foods like nuts and corn, even seeds and popcorn as they can in a way agitate the colon.
“It is not exactly clear where this idea came from because there are no studies showing this to be the case,” researcher Lisa L. Strate, MD, MPH, tells WebMD. “It just became a part of medical lore.”
The study was published Tuesday in TheJournal of the American Medical Association.
