A German farmer has regained partial use of his hands after undergoing a double arm transplant following a horrific farm accident.
54 year old Karl Merk, can now open doors and turn on lights with his new hands, and is overjoyed to be able to function with his new limbs which he received after a 15 hour operation back in July.
“It was really overwhelming when I saw that I had arms again,” he said.
His current goals are to be able to dress himself and to ride a motorcycle.
Merk is currently staying at a clinic in Germany and according to doctors he maybe able to go home in 4 to 6 weeks.
Doctors have also stated that disco dome with slide nerve growth in Merk’s arms is very positive but it could take up to 2 years for him to regain full use of his hands.
“All in all, our wildest expectations have pretty much been fulfilled,” said Christoph Hoehnke, one of the lead doctors.
