There was good news and bad news today for the co-founders of a file sharing website known as The Pirate Bay. A Swedish appeals court actually shortened the prison sentences given to Peter Sunde, Fredrik Neij and Gottfrid Svartholm and all will be out in a few months.
“The Appeals Court, like the district court, finds that The Pirate Bay service makes possibly illegal filesharing in a way that entails a punishable offence for those who run the service,” the court said in its ruling.
The bad news however came in the form of increased damages being awarded to the multiple movie and music distribution companies. Originally the damages were set at an estimated 4.5 million dollars but they have been jacked up to more than 6 million bucks. “This is because the Appeals Court to a larger extent than the district court has accepted the plaintiffs’ presented evidence of their losses,” the court said.
