Folic acid can apparently make the world of difference when it comes to whether or not a child is smart in school.
New research indicates that pregnant women who supplement with folic acid are more than likely going to give birth to kids who excel in the classroom.
Researchers from Johns Hopkins University studied more than 670 children from rural Nepal, analyzing scores on an array of different intelectual tests.
The compared the results in children born to mothers who took prenatal supplements containing iron and folic acid to those children born to mothers who did not.
Not only did the children born to mothers who took prenatal supplements do better in the classroom, they appeared to also be more organized and have better motor skills.
The researchers believe that for the future of young children when it comes to their ability to thrive in poor countries, it is important for their mothers to take prenatal supplements.
