A new test combining spinal fluid and MRIs of the brain has been developed which can locate the presence of Alzheimer’s disease in healthy people.
Alzheimer’s disease is characterized as the build up of a plaque protein on the brain which impairs memory and eventually leads to death.
In the study, researchers recruited more than 100 healthy elderly adults none of whom showed any sign of dementia.
Researchers divided the participants into groups depending on their individual levels of cerebrospinal fluid.
They then conducted repeat MRIs on the participants and noted that the group with lower levels of CSF had rapid brain shrinkage, a symptom of Alzheimer’s disease.
These same participants were also found to be at much greater risk of possessing a gene specifically linked to Alzheimer’s disease known as APOE4.
