Chuck Tanner, the man who led the Pittsburgh Pirates to the 1979 World Series has died. He died at the age of 82.
Tanner coached in the big leagues for 19 years as a Major League manager, compiling a 1352-1381 record with the Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics, Pirates and Atlanta Braves. “While no-one had a sharper baseball mind, Chuck was loved by his players and the city of Pittsburgh because he was always positive, enthusiastic and optimistic about his Bucs and life in general,” Pirates president Frank Coonelly said in a statement.
