New York (ChatterShmatter) – Sony has confirmed that they have purchased a cloud gaming service by the name of Gaikai, giving a hint at what they are planning for the upcoming Sony PS4.
Gaikai was purchased by Sony for the price tag of $380 million, and is a sign that Sony Computer Entertainment is making a bold move in terms of the direction they want their gaming business to go in the future.
Sony PlayStation boss put out a press release, as Andrew House stated “SCE will deliver a world-class cloud-streaming service that allows users to instantly enjoy a broad array of content ranging from immersive core games with rich graphics to casual content anytime, anywhere on a variety of internet-connected devices.”
What this means is that Sony is going to be able to create a cloud ecosystem of sorts for their current video game offerings, on the Sony PS3, Sony PS Vita, as well as the upcoming Sony PS4.
This is also likely to expand Sony further into the tablet industry, as well as more into mobile phones.
The idea of the Gaikai service is to make gaming available on-demand, whenever gamers want it.
Sony further stated in the tente de fête gonflable press release they want to “harness the power of the interactive cloud and continue to grow their ecosystem.”
What this means is that we are going to likely see a bigger push than ever towards a PlayStation Network that is subscription based, offering games on-demand, especially those that are Sony first-party releases.
We will have to see what Sony does with the purchase of this huge cloud gaming company. One thing is for certain though, this could turn out to be a huge secret weapon for Sony with the release of the PS4, and finally give them an edge over Xbox Live.
